Mr Richard Wong Chow
September 26, 1942 - January 27, 2021
On January 27, 2021, Richard Chow passed through death to everlasting life. Richard grew up and lived in Chinatown until the age of 27. While working for the NYC transit during the midnight shift and going to community college, he nevertheless had the time to meet a beautiful college senior, Margaret Chin. Richard and Margaret (aka Peggy) would get married and settle in Midwood Brooklyn, where they lived in the same house for 40 years. It was in this house that they raised two daughters, Jennifer and Christine. Richard loved helping the girls with school projects, running around the block with the girls to train them for field day, and being able to fix anything, including his car and the girls’ bikes. While not the type of dad to play Barbie, he taught the girls special skills such as playing cards, making a monkey’s fist knot, shooting a bow and arrow, or picking a lock. Richard had a quick wit, great sense of humor, magnetic and BIG personality and a winning smile that made him friends everywhere he went. After 35 years and retiring as a signal maintainer for the NYC transit, he remained part of the Transit Brotherhood. He kept close with his friends by attending luncheons, holiday parties and retirement dinners. When Richard and Peggy downsized to a three-bedroom condo in Marine Park, he had the opportunity to meet new friends whether in the halls of the place he now called home or the various senior centers he and his wife joined. Richard enjoyed his retirement (“The check keeps coming in”). Richard and Peggy made frequent trips to Atlantic City where he ate at buffets, honed his slot machine skills, competed in slot tournaments, and collected many casino points and free gifts from various casinos. Richard and Peggy traveled to Hawaii and cruised on the Queen Mary, and with the entire family they also vacationed to dude ranches each year. He took great delight in the challenge of finding and collecting various “treasures.” He spent endless hours cooking, painting, talking with friends, watching TV and reading magazines, newspapers, cook books, car books, or anything with writing in it. But most of all he enjoyed being with family, especially his three grandkids. Richard was a loved and wonderful husband, dad, father-in-law, brother-in-law, relative, and friend, but he was the greatest grandfather, whether he went by the name Poppy or GungGung. He took great pleasure in watching DVDs and videos with the grandkids, playing games with them, giving them endless presents, seeing their sporting events, driving them to the library, IHOP, Boston Market, or Starbucks, and eating sushi, raw clams, donuts, ice cream, or pizza with them. He is survived by his cherished wife Peggy of 50 years, his daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer and Peter Van Syckle and Christine and James Baggs, and much-loved grandchildren, Jenna and PJ Van Syckle and Alexa Baggs. He will be missed but never forgotten. Relatives and friends may offer the family condolences or share fond memories by posting below. Weather permitting, the funeral service will be held at Resurrection Church, 2331 Gerritsen Ave Brooklyn, NY on Thursday February 4th at 1030 am. No interment will follow. The family kindly requests no flowers
